Shintō: A Living Way
Shintō is the genius of Japan — a natural form of spirituality arising from the deep personal, familial, and societal connection to the mystery and flow of divine nature.
Shintō is a way of living: a holistic worldview expressed through attitudes, seasonal observances, and embodied practices that harmonize human life with the dynamic flow of Heaven, Earth, and Kami.
Emerging spontaneously in deep prehistory, Shintō's profound spiritual technology supports our sensing, aligning with, and responding to the subtle rhythms of Ki, the life vitality animating all existence. We naturally understand our role within the great fabric of life and learn to hear the quiet whisper and heartbeat of Divine Nature.
Beyond Conversion: A Natural Affinity
For those raised within Western religious cultures, it is natural to initially approach Shintō through comparison. However, Shintō is better understood not as an alternative religion, but as a remembering — a resonance with a time when human beings lived in direct relationship with the cosmos and the living Earth.
It is often and correctly said that Shintō is "caught, not taught" — more akin to falling in love than intellectually adopting an ideology. True feelings are difficult to define, impossible to deny.
What Membership Means in Shintō
Strictly speaking, membership in Shintō does not exist. What does exist is the relationship between a shrine and its supporting community.
One may become a Sūkeisha — a supporting member of a particular shrine — by choosing to participate in and support its existence, mission, and activities. This relationship is mutual:
- The Jinja exists as primal earthly home for Okamisama and to support the spiritual lives of its members
- The Sūkeisha supports the continued existence and evolution of Kannagara Inari.
This is the Shintō principle of co-existence and cooperative interconnectedness — life supporting life.
